세계사와 곰브리치(World History and Gombrich)

생각이 고착화되어 있으면 주변에 고통을 준다. 자신은 그 사실을 모른다. 곰브리치 세계사의 저자로 유명한 곰브리치(E.H. Gombrich 1909-2001)는 아는 만큼 보인다고 말한다. 한편으로는 “미술에 관해서는 아무것도 모르는게 좋다.”라고 말하면서 창조적 행위에 대해서는 창조적인 첫 발자국이 중요하다는 사실을 말하고 있다.

On the one hand, he says, “It’s better to know nothing about art.” In other words, when it comes to creative behavior, it says that a creative first step is important.

작년에 원저가 영어로 출판된 책은 실력이 부족해도 영어원서로 읽겠다는 결심을 했다. 가장 먼저 구입한 책이 BBC방영과 관련된 Andrew Marr의 [A History of the World]였다. 간혹 뭔지 모르게 스트레스를 받아 머리가 멍해지고 아플 때, 세계사 책이나 지리책을 보면 머리가 맑아지고 즐거웠다. 아마 정신이 넓은 세계로 향하는 즐거움을 느낀 것 같았다.

Last year, I decided to read books published in english even though I was not good at them. The first book I bought was Andrew Marr’s [History of the World], which is related to the BBC. Sometimes when my head is heavy because of stress without knowing what it is, I recovered when I read world history books or geography books. Perhaps there was a joy in spreading the mind to the wide world.

 배운 지식과는 별개로 인생 경험이 많은 노인분들과 대화를 해보면 재미있고 창조적이다. 반드시 배우는게 있고 내 고민을 토로하고 의지할 수 있다. 많이 배웠으나 경험이 없는 젊은이들에게는 내가 먹은 나이만큼 마음이 읽혀지곤 한다. 대칭의 경우도 있다. 결국은 현실적 경험이 많고 지식이 많은 상태는 최상이다. 경험과 지식은 시간이 없으면 얻지 못한다.

Aside from the knowledge they have learned, it is fun and creative to talk to elderly people who have many life experiences. They have something to learn and can tell and rely on my difficulties. The minds of young people who have learned a lot but have no experience are well read. Sometimes it’s symmetrical. After all, the state of being realistic and knowledgeable is the best. Experience and knowledge do not come without time.

일본의 아베수상은 두 가지가 다 부족하다. 평등사상이 부족한 동아시아의 엘리트교육이 만든 문제아다. 민생을 살핀 경험도 없고 세계를 넓게 인식할 수 있는 관점도 부족하다. 책임이 주어지지 않은 시민에게는 문제가 안 될 수 있지만 한 국가를 이끌고 나가는 지도자에게는 큰 결점이다. 이념적인 정치인은 아는 것도 없고 경험도 없다. 습관속에서 만들어진 몽롱한 아집과 상상만 있다.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe lacks both. This is a side effect created by elite education in East Asia, which lacks equal ideas. He has no experience of looking at people’s lives and has no view of the world. It is not a problem for citizens who have no major responsibility, but it is a major flaw for the nation’s leader. Ideological politicians have neither knowledge nor experience. There is only a haze of stubbornness and imagination created by habit.
