Diplomat on the Korean Peninsula

Perhaps our family is the most affected South Koreans by the division of the two Koreas. Both my parents are from North Korea. There has been a comprehensive experience of the harsh environment created by the division of the Korean Peninsula, such as the massacre, abduction of North Koreans, and agents.

I’ve been trying to think of this problem more fundamentally. I tried to exclude my interests as much as possible and to think in a way that would somehow help the future through as much learning and research as possible. And I think North Korea is the most damaged community in the history of geographical environment and international relations.

The biggest factor that interferes with fundamental thought is habit and intellectual ability. Sometimes, I read books hard when I was worried about being sayed by certain ideologies as a reason for the creation of a ego that pursues realistic interests in my mind. I am reading books related to history, economics, and diplomacy in order not to narrow my thinking, and if there is no Korean translation, I bought and read foreign books.

A few days ago, a former North Korean diplomat at the National Assembly caused an ideological dispute at a hearing of the unification minister nominee. I think it is a very unprofitable argument from the standpoint of observing the link between North Korean diplomats’ defection and North Korea’s cryptographic broadcasting. The world has changed even if the people who argue have not changed. Because the world is trying to improve and ideological thinking is just a hindrance. In the meantime, some people have changed their minds, and others are implicity expressing their thoughts that have not yet changed.

At the Honoi conference, the South Korean delegation confirmed that the U.S.delegation’s decision-making was not a top-down approach. Likewise, I have confirmed that the decision-making methods of diplomats from the two Koreas are bureaucratic enemies and have ideological habits.

When former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon received his first appointment to the United States, he reportedly sent letters to other diplomats in a sorry manner. There is also a recollection that when former U.N. Ambassador Park Soo-gil ran into the North Korean ambassador at the U.N. the North Korean ambassador unconditionally swore at him.

Unlike the autonomy of diplomats, which are commonly thought by advanced people, it is regrettable that politics and ideology on the Korean Peninsula have been constraining many of the diplomats’ thoughts and actions.
