Irrational world politics and Napoleon

Compared to young people, older people do a lot of irrational behavior. Working with the elderly shows that many of them are in the illusion of being the boss. When the same kind of people who are aiming for the boss gather, they always fight. Until there is a bad ending, the intellectual abilities of the elders are busy forming a conflict rather than rationality. I was able to insight into the common behavior of these elders in both intellectual and simple workplaces.

 

The irrational trend of the elderly is increasing not only in the workplace where I work, but also in national management and international relations. The same is true of Korean politics, the politics of China and Russia, and the West, although temporary due to the influence of democratic political systems. It is natural for the elders who grew up in the Cold War to lead the world to the Cold War. This is because the worldview they learned when they were young has been fixed for a long time and forms the current order.

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who deeply studied Mao Zedong's ideas during the Cold War, made China a country competing for hegemony with the United States. The United States, which has contributed a lot to China's scientific and technological development with its globalization ideology, experienced the reality that the globalization ideology became a boomerang and had bad results for the United States. The U.S. has also offered an inevitable protectionist card. Politics in the United States is much easier to come up with such a decision. This is because most of the members of the Biden administration spent their youth during the Cold War. Moreover, Russian President Putin has made irrational decisions these days, sending the world into a state of war.

 

Napoleon was also a pioneer of modern technocrat managers. He studied many science subjects, especially mathematics. He always had scientists and engineers around him and looked ahead in the same way as scientists. He ended up in trouble because he lost his precise calculation power and did something reckless like the Russian invasion.

Nowadays, the politics of young people with a reasonable world view is needed rather than ideology or religion. These days, even if not necessarily young people, the world needs talented people who can think reasonably.

 

 

비합리적 세계정치와 나폴레옹

젊은이들에 비해서 연장자들은 비합리적인 행위를 많이 한다. 연장자들과 일을 해보면 많은 연장자들이 자신이 보스(두목)라는 환상에 빠져 있음을 알 수 있다. 보스를 지향하는 같은 부류의 사람들을 모아 놓으면 반드시 싸운다. 어떤 나쁜 결말이 날 때가지 연장자들의 지적인 능력은 합리성보다는 갈등의 장을 형성하기 바쁘다. 나는 지적인 일터나 단순한 일터 모두에서 이러한 연장자들의 공통된 행태를 통찰할 수 있었다.

 

내가 가담하고 있는 일터뿐만이 아니고 국가경영이나 국제관계에서도 연장자들의 비합리적인 추세는 증대되고 있다. 한국의 정치가 그렇고, 중국과 러시아의 정치가 그렇고, 민주주의 정치체제의 영향으로 일시적이긴 하지만 서방세계도 마찬가지다. 냉전시대에 성장했던 연장자들이 세계를 냉전의 세계로 이끄는 것은 당연하다. 그들이 젊었을 때 배운 세계관이 오랫동안 고착되어 지금의 질서를 형성하기 때문이다.

 

냉전시대에 마오쩌뚱의 사상을 깊이 학습한 중국의 시진핑 주석은 중국을 미국과 패권경쟁을 하는 국가로 대립각을 세웠다. 세계화 이념으로 중국의 과학기술 발전에 많은 기여를 한 미국은 세계화 이념이 부메랑이 되어 미국에 나쁜 결과를 가져 오는 현실을 체험했다. 미국도 피치 못할 보호무역주의 카드를 내놓게 되었다. 미국의 정치는 위와 같은 결정을 내놓기 훨씬 수월하다. 바이든 행정부의 구성원들이 대부분 냉전시대에 젊은 시절을 보낸 인물들이기 때문이다. 게다가 요즘은 러시아의 푸틴 대통령도 비합리적인 결정을 하여 세계를 전란에 빠뜨렸다.

 

나폴레옹은 현대적 테크노크라트(technocrat, 전문기술자 출신의 고급관료) 경영자들의 선구자이기도 했다. 그는 여러 과학 과목을 두루 공부했으며, 특히 수학을 좋아했다. 그는 주변에 항상 과학자와 기술자들을 두었으며, 과학자와 같은 방식으로 앞일을 내다보았다. 그가 결국 문제에 부닥치게 된 것도 정밀한 계산력을 잃어버린 채, 러시아 침공과 같은 무모한 일을 벌였기 때문이다.

요즘 세계는 이념이나 종교 보다는 합리적인 세계관을 가진 청년들의 정치가 필요하다. 반드시 청년들이 아니라도 합리적인 사고를 할 수 있는 인재들이 필요한 시대일 것이다.   

Ethical Intelligence and Conservative Politics

When aging comes to the body and mind, the view of the world can be blackened (negative and darkened). Those who perceive it themselves try to grow old brightly through exercise, reading, and labor. In particular, altruistic or utilitarian ideas can give you an opportunity to organize yourself.

 

I've met many generations of people for a long time. The younger people are, the better. Young people are always busy because they have a lot to do in the future without seeing the world due to profit and loss. But when people are older than middle-aged, they feel betrayed by themselves and the world. They are angry at themselves for having achieved nothing, and the world and the years that have made them so.

 

Most violent criminals in the news are middle-aged and elderly. It is also middle-aged and elderly people who act rude to bus drivers on the bus. It is also true that middle-aged and elderly people are strongly engaged in political battles in the political arena. In societies with vertical relationships such as Japan and Korea, middle-aged and elderly people always try to "take an authoritarian attitude with age." The result is conservative politics.

 

China and Russia have middle-aged and elderly leaders in power for a long time. It is inevitable that the policy direction is very conservative and national. They have more ideas about power and vertical relations than about a peaceful future. It is inevitable that there is a tight heart that cannot be conceded in domestic political relations and cannot be conceded in relations between countries. Moreover, if the middle-aged people support political power, a world of overall blackness will open. That's why we need a young politician.

 

Now, let's briefly summarize, when we talk about politics at work, we tend to violate the first principle of ethical intelligence and the third principle of "respecting others." Such conversations should be made at the right time and place outside of the workplace. It's not easy to suppress the temptation to talk political at work, but ethically smart people don't fall for it.

I resist the temptation to say that the world today will be ruined by middle-aged people and conservative politics. I am also a middle-aged person, so it is logically reasonable for me to reflect on what I am saying.

 

 

윤리지능과 보수정치

몸과 마음에 노화가 찾아오면 세상을 보는 관점이 흑화(부정적이고 어두워짐) 될 수 있다. 그것을 스스로 인지하는 사람들은 운동, 독서, 노동 등을 통하여 밝게 늙어갈려는 노력을 한다. 특히 이타적이거나 공리적인 생각은 자신을 정돈할 기회를 주기도 한다.

 

오랫동안 여러 세대의 사람들을 만나보는데, 나이가 어릴수록 선량한 것은 어쩔 수가 없다. 젊은이는 이해관계로 세상을 보지 않고 미래에 할 일이 많아서 늘 바쁘다. 그러나 중장년이 되면 자신과 세상에 대해 배신감을 느낄 때다. 아무것도 이룬 것이 없는 자신과 그렇게 만든 세상과 세월에 대해서 화가 난다.

 

뉴스에 나오는 강력범은 대개가 중장년이다. 버스 안에서 버스기사에게 시비를 벌이는 이도 반드시 중장년이다. 정치판에서 정치적인 쟁투를 강력하게 벌이는 이도 확실히 중장년이다. 일본이나 한국 같은 상명하복(When a superior commands, his subordinates obey)의 수직적인 관계의 전통이 있는 사회에서는 중장년층이 반드시 ‘나이 값’을 할려고 노력한다. 그 결과는 보수정치로 나타난다.

 

중국이나 러시아는 중장년의 지도자가 1인 장기집권을 하고 있다. 정책 방향이 매우 보수적이고 국수적인 것은 어쩔 수 없다. 평화로운 미래상보다 권력과 수직관계에 관한 생각이 많다. 국내의 정치적인 관계에서도 양보할 수 없고 국가 사이의 관계에서도 양보할 수 없는 팍팍한 마음이 드는 것은 어쩔 수 없다. 더구나 중장년 세대의 국민들이 정치권력을 지지하는 현장은 총체적인 흑화의 세계가 열린다. 그래서 청년 정치인이 필요하다.

 

이제 간단히 정리를 해보자, 직장에서 정치 얘기를 하다보면 ‘남에게 해를 끼치지 마라’는 윤리지능의 제1원칙과 ‘다른 사람을 존중하라’는 제3원칙을 위반하기 십상이다. 그런 대화는 직장이 아닌 다른 곳에서 알맞은 시간과 장소를 택해야 한다. 직장에서 정치적인 얘기를 하고 싶은 유혹을 누르기는 쉽지 않지만 윤리적으로 똑똑한 사람은 그런 유혹에 넘어가지 않는다.

요즘 세상은 중장년층과 보수정치 때문에 망하게 될 것이라고 말하고 싶은 유혹을 참는다. 나도 중장년 세대이기 때문에 내 자신이 하는 말을 온건한 마음으로 돌아보는 것이 논리적으로 합당하다.
